and -- chris: background checks? >> full background checks. the n.r.a. is going to be too smart by half here. they're going to totally oppose any kind of gun restrictions. and what they're going to end up with is the kind of background -- full background check scheme that the tea party types and the n.r.a. really don't like but what's really necessary. chris: let's talk about the n.r.a. this week they were very rejectionist and said get out of here and we're not doing anything. where are they going to end up? >> as howard was just saying on the background checks, one of the things that makes that particular issue different is that you have a lot of industry onboard. so people who sell guns, a company like wal-mart, they benefit if background checks are being applied to the loophole gun sales that currently are actually stealing their business. so areas where the n.r.a. can find common ground with business and common ground with the white house is where you will see the most action. chris: when it's all done and the dust settles what will the american people do through their congress to get s

researching gun violence at all. the last time they did get funding the nra has one of the members of congress budget be cut by that amount. and the universal background checks for all gun sales. and that measure at least has brood public support. 85% of republicans support background checks. the vast majority. it might actually have a chance at passing. some of the other proposals from the president will face stiffer objection like the call to reinstate the assault weapon's ban. banning the kind of weapon that can blast a body a child's body to pieces that's important. and now there are brave voices calling for change. one mother from one of the victims in newtown submitted a list of proposals to the task force. when she buried her son a month ago she had an open-casket funeral, and he is invited the governor to attend. she wanted him to see the horror of these wounds. she said we all saw how beautiful he was. he had thick shiny hair. beautiful long eyelashes that rested on his cheeks. he looked like he was sleeping but the reality of it buzz under the cloth he

insight into that fascinating meeting today at the white house between vice president biden and the nra. what can the vice president, what can the white house reasonably expect to get out of the nra today? >> the nra is going to go in there with a conciliatory face. they're being smart. they're sending not their top lobbyist but an official who has worked with biden over the years, worked with him in the '90s in the senate, is actually friends with him from the delaware beach, jim baker, the nra's number two, but he's coming with a very hard message. the nra told me that in the past 18 days, their paid memberships have gone up 100,000. they've gone from 4.1 million to 4.2 million. and they tell me that before this debate is over, they want to get to 5 million. so the nra sees this fight as a growth opportunity. willie, it's $25 a year, you get a free camo duffel bag with that. and we're told that jim baker, the nra lobbyist, is going to tell vice president biden we're willing to discuss, talk to you about any possible constructive solution, but here's the kicker, we listen to people bey

from the executive branch. of course when you're dealing with the nra this is somewhat expected. republicans have made no secrets that they intend to make the confirmation of chuck hagel very difficult. and jack lou who was nominated for treasury secretary will have a much easier go of it than hagel. well the conventional wisdom may be wrong. alabama senator jeff sessions, who is the ranking minority member of the senate budget committee had this to say about jack lou. >> i tend to oppose this nomination. he doesn't bring the former new york fed chairman like secretary geithner and other very prominent people that we've had as secretary of treasury the premier financial position in the united states government more important because our president has no training, and really no understanding of class classical business and economics. >> jennifer: and an unnamed congression nat source told the "washington post" jennifer ruben that lou was the one to screw up any dales deals and proposed lefty positions, whatever that means. and, we don't need a treasury secretary who thinks that w

in the nbc news/"wall street journal" about the nra. 41% think of them positively, 34% negative. hollywood think 23% favorable, 46% negatively. we talked before about lance armstrong and pr. clearly the nra has got a pr challenge here. how do you think they've done so far since newtown in positioning themselves to be strong in this fight? >> why are you looking at me, mark? >> i'm just starting with you randomly. i went alphabetical. >> yeah, the nra has had good days and bad days in this. and actually, that depends how you look at it. even when the nra has a bad day and the media is calling them too aggressive, that's a good day for the nra. that usually ends up working in their favor in terms of membership. but, you know, i think the politics of maligning the nra is probably not a strategically good idea. that poll, for example, showing the favorability numbers, gun sales have skyrocketed, there's been an urgency to vilify the nra. for example, there's an ad out right now, one of a dozen, maligning a congressman named john barrow, a democrat in georgia. it's a democrat-on-democrat sort o

the problem as you pointed out of straw purchases which happens quite a bit. and the nra has opposed any efforts to crack down on straw purchasers and to do anything on the enforcement side. for instance, the background check is inadequate and has holes in it. the n raz has opposed microstamping of bullets that are important for case where is you have straw purchases. the nra has opposed the atf from doing more than one visit to a gun shop in any given year which is an invitation to unscrupulous gun dealers. there are so many places in which our gun laws invite criminals and terrorists. the availability of the 50 caliber rifle that anybody involved in law enforcement or counterterrorism says is a menace and invitation to terrorists in our society. the fact the nra opposes any kind of regulations or laws dealing with weapons like that shows you what the nra wants is a system that will invite criminals, terrorists, and others to reap the kind of gun violence that we're seeing. since newtown occurred, there's been 396 gun homicides. 26 children have been killed since newtown. where is the m

their fight against the nra. >>> good to be with you here on this tuesday. i'm brooke baldwin. and i want to begin with the plane boeing says will define the future of the air travel. but for the last month or so, if you've been following this with us, the 787 dreamliner has made most of its headlines really for all these mechanical problems. here is just the latest, just a couple of hours ago, this japan airline, 787, was preparing to leaf above then when it started leaking fuel. so guess what happened? flight had to be canceled. and just yesterday morning, same airport, boston's logan airport, small fire broke out on yet another japan airline 787, just about 30 minutes after its arrival from tokyo. all the passengers and crew, they had already left the plane, but there is still a lot to talk about when we talk about what is supposed to be the revolutionary jet. let me begin with sandra endo, watching today's issue for us from washington. sandra, what happened now? >> yeah, brooke. a new day, a new problem for boeing's marquis airplane, the dreamliner, just before noon us is, the pilots

participating in sporting events with the nra where these assault rifles are used. he could ban funding of certain programs. there are ways he can work around the edges of gun control, but i cannot see how he would ban weapons outright. >> first of all, reality check. an executive order cannot supersede the constitution. so everyone just chill out. we have a lot of record as paul just said, of executive orders being done -- w. had 291 executive orders. again, reality check. in terms of what the president could do, in some ways, it's consistent with what the nra calls for. three things the president could do. one, prosecute criminals who lie on their background checks. 71,000 people lied on their background checks in 2009. the justice department only prosecuted 77 of them. less than 1%. that's one thing the president could do, say, look, let's prosecute that more aggressively. number two, there's another one, national institute of criminal background checks. this happened after virginia tech and the nra was instrumental in pushing for this. it said we need to make sure that mental backgr

could be a very difficult meeting tomorrow at the white house. the nra association ceo wayne lapierre, is sending the director, the lobbyist for nra's wing to represent the lobbying group in a meeting with the vice president. the president also in attendance, and there will be representatives from walmart, which first declined to attend the meeting due to what they absurdly called a "scheduling conflict." they released a letter, saying knowing our leaders couldn't be there, we shared our perspective. we under estimated the expectation to attend the meeting on thursday in person, so we are sending an appropriate representative to participate. we take this issue very seriously and are committed to staying engaged in this discussion, as the administration and congress work toward a consensus on the right path forward. joining me now is the democratic senator from connecticut, richard blumenthal, who will soon take action on a bill. tell us first of all about the bill you intend to introduce. >> the bill i intend to introduce really has to be seen as part of a comprehensive set of measure

pro-gun, even pro-nra people support and there is a possibility you could get high capacity magazines through the house but whatever happens, it seems like the senate will -- >> i hope we get votes. one of the things i was offended by in the simpson/bowles process was people never knew how their member of the house or senate felt because they didn't have clean up or down votes. i think we're owed that. >> the not so bad world you're correct. we should have votes up and down on this. i think right now the people who are the obstructionists, the republicans, the gun lobby, are talking more reasonably than they will a month or two or three down the road when some of these things come up for possible votes. more important than deciding to have a big package, the only way this will succeed is if the president can keep up the intensity level on his side, on the side of those people who want to see these things passed. we know that the gun lobby and the gun fanatics will be very intense not just tomorrow but six months from now and a year from now and to overcome that opposition, which will
